You're Having Multiples! Now What?

The doctor walks in to begin the ultrasound. Then you hear it, those shocking words. Even if you think it might be multiples, you are never ready for the words you are about to hear! “It’s multiples!” Yes, your doctor is calm and reassuring that all will be fine. However, your mind is racing at speeds unknown to mankind! How could this crazy doctor be so incredibly calm, doesn’t she/he know your having multiples!

You walk slowly out of the exam room and wonder to yourself, “What am I going to do?” “How did this happen?” “Will our income support this?” “Is that doctor’s equipment working properly?”

So, here it is. Your life just changed, in a BIG way! Your pregnancy just became twice, three times, even four times more exciting! Your mind is filled questions, your heart is filled with joy and delight and probably a little fear.

So, what next? Where do you go from here? Well, here is where the fun begins. You just clear your mind and remember that this is going to be the most memorable time in your life. You are having multiples and that is really SPECIAL! You are carrying some of God’s most amazing creations, it is not everyday that multiples are born! Embrace this experience and enjoy every moment…and yes, it is ok to panic a little everyday!

Now, it is time to tell the family and friends, trust me you are about to become Mr. and Mrs. Popularity! Next, have a family meeting. Make a list of questions, keeping your family involved, that you will have for your doctor on your next visit. Remember that although your pregnancy is high risk and may have complications, many a multiples mom has made it just fine with the help of a great doctor! Find support groups, they have them in every state and most cities. Remember, that talking to those who have already “been through this battle” will help you feel that you will indeed make it through this. However, never forget your family they are your largest support group. Vent your concerns and fears, and joys, and anticipation.

Now you can begin to plan. You need the cribs, the stroller, the car seats, the bottles, and the list goes on and on. Just make sure that you plan wisely and get enough of what you will need to ensure that your new little treasures have everything that they need when you welcome them into their new world.

Read books, consult your church, talk to friends and family, call neighbors, contact MOMS (mothers of multiples), and NOMOTC (National Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs), ect. They will offer their help and you would be crazy to turn it down! You could even make a schedule for “post-birth” help. Have family members and friends take turns assisting you in any way you feel comfortable with. Just find support for now and later! Now, just sit back and relax. You are in good care and so are your babies. You have the next 8 or 9 months planned as well as possible, a good doctor, and plenty of support.
