Parents Info

By the time your multiples reach their first birthday you will probably have formed some kind of a routine (I hope). If not, you will probably have a few more white hairs. More than likely you will be looking forward to doing more interesting things with them, as they grow older. Such activities as going to the park or any other outdoor activity you may enjoy. Going to the park? Let me tell you a secret... they tend to run in different directions! So make sure you either go with somebody else or take them somewhere that they can play without you worrying and trying to run in several different directions.

You may need to tackle issues such as weaning them off bottles or breast, and getting them to eat family food rather than baby food. Now let me give you a little advise that I wish I would of have gotten with my first son. Whatever you eat, they should eat (with in reason and following all food safety precautions...check with your pediatrician). In other words do not make them a special menu. I have two reasons why I say this:

  • You will have to cook more.

  • They may get used to eating certain things only

By only eating certain food items your child will not receive a complete diet. By now you will also need to ensure that they are safe in every aspect possible as multiple toddlers do seem to have a tendency of wanting to explore higher places and get into to plenty of mischief, You truly need to remain 3 or 4 steps ahead of them at all times!

    Behavior

You will need set boundaries for acceptable behavior, unless you want multiple riots on a daily basis! Children do feel secure when they have boundaries and generally like to feel that someone is going to lead the way. Don't feel that you are being mean if you say no to things, although you should explain WHY they cannot do or have something. By talking to your children you are developing their listening and reasoning skills and hopefully showing them that you can get results by talking rather than by throwing a tantrum. This will be vital as they get a little older and tantrums often become the key method of getting Mommy and Daddy to comply with their every requests.

Multiples will also trade personalities. OH YES THEY DO! Today he could be a perfect angel... tomorrow who knows! My experience is that about every two months, just when I think I know who I am dealing with, THEY SWITCH! This is common with multiples however, not all of them will do this.

    Treat them as individuals!

Multiples generally benefit from being treated as individuals, and often enjoy spending quality time with one parent or relative on a one-to-one basis. If you have other children as well as your multiples ensure that you have equal time for all. We know it's hard, but just try your best. As soon as your children are old enough to express a preference (even by just simply pointing) let them express an opinion and make their own choices. You will want to begin "taking turns" early. Let them take turns at being the first to choose. This will avoid a situation where a less confident multiple always follows the lead of a more confident multiple.

Use Positive Parenting wherever Possible; Wherever possible praise your children for good behavior, and try to boost their confidence as much as possible. Give compliments freely, they will build up your child's self esteem to no end.

**Remember at all times they are your children: It is up to you to bring them up whichever way is best, no matter what it says in any book, magazine, or website.
